Coach, School Based Literacy K-3
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
The School-Based Literacy Coach is responsible for providing daily literacy coaching services at assigned high priority schools ensuring a cohesive, sustained, intensive and classroom-focused approach that drives student achievement.
Literacy coaching practices will include strategies that are evidence-based, rigorous, engaging, and relevant for students.
Literacy coaches will provide a non-threatening, open, professional, and collaborative work relationship with classroom teachers, principal, school leadership teams and district-level school personnel.
School-based literacy coaches will support the district and school literacy goals so that students in their assigned school achieve grade level reading by the end of 3rd grade.
These goals align to NC SB387, the WS/FCS Literacy Framework, and ESSER plan.
The School-Based Literacy Coach position is funded for three years through ESSER funding.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide daily coaching support (at least 80% of the school week) to classroom teachers in grades K-3 in their capacity to support instruction of the 5 components of reading, implement curriculum, administer assessments, analyze data, and intervention.
Provide literacy instruction to students in grades K-3 (20% of the school week) through small group instruction and/or intervention.
This can also include model lessons, co-teaching, and lesson studies.
Establish effective coaching cycles and conferencing techniques with K-3 teachers, aligned with the district coaching model.
Conference with individual teachers to ensure that teachers assigned to them have specific goals and plans for improving practice.
Provide clear, practical, timely, and candid written and oral feedback to teachers reviewing their literacy instructional practices
Assist administrators, district ELA coaches, and teachers in addressing grade specific curriculum by developing an effective school-wide literacy plan and providing strategies for monitoring the plan’s implementation.
Design and conduct literacy professional development to provide teachers with specific knowledge and skills to meet the varied needs of students in meeting literacy goals
Meet regularly with principal, district ELA coaches, and teachers to review data and make recommendations for adjustments in instructional practices.
Participate in required literacy coaching professional development provided by the district to build capacity and expertise in literacy coaching and effective instructional practices.
Maintain an organized system for documenting coaching services as outlined by the district.
Other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated knowledge of literacy instruction with elementary students
Demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina ELA standards and pedagogy
Deep knowledge and experience in research/evidence based instructional practice, assessment driven instruction
Deep knowledge and experience in effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for building an environment with a common instructional focus, promoting initiatives, and conveying expectations
Demonstrated ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing
Demonstrated strength in organization and efficiency in meeting deadlines and multi-tasking appropriately
Demonstrated ability to function as a collaborative member of a team
Demonstrated interest in literacy and professional learning and reflection
Demonstration of leadership skills
Excellent listening skills
Ability to mentor new teachers
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Education or other related field
Desirable: Master’s Degree or above in Education or other related field
Minimum: Five years successful teaching experience
Desirable: Successful literacy coaching experience or leadership experience in elementary education
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Current NC teaching license required
