FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is directing, coordinating, and overseeing all functions & staff associated with the operation of the district transportation program for a specific corridor.
Position ensures adherence to district policies and administrative guidelines associated with local, state and federal transportation regulations.
Position holds primary responsibility for ensuring adequate staffing, resolving and/or recommending solutions to transportation incidents, complaints and/or accidents while assuring safe, economical, and efficient transportation services for students in assigned area.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct supervision to substitute, temporary, permanent part-time, and full-time employees (bus drivers, bus assistants, and office support) addressing staffing/scheduling, discipline issues, completing performance evaluations, recommending, and implementing appropriate training sessions.
Verifies and approves timekeeping documentation for assigned employees.
·Communicates weekly with Principals and Assistant Principals in assigned area addressing transportation concerns and opportunities for improvement.
Position requires significant public interaction in resolving issues with students’ behavior and/or parental preferences then coordinating decisions and action steps with school personnel.
Performs site visits when required.
Monitors road conditions during inclement weather and other traffic related hazards for assigned area communicating findings and recommendations promptly to administration.
Investigates all school bus accidents; as well as, any incidents identified by school administration by reviewing video and talking with all parties involved.
Documenting and reporting findings to appropriate chain-of-command.
Implement corrective action when needed.
Provides insight to needed bus routes, bus runs, and appropriate staffing model to reach optimum efficiency and safest transportation of students in assigned area.
Participating in the recruiting and onboarding processes to meet staffing levels when needed.
Collaborates with Transportation Specialist to ensure all routes are covered, authorizing substitute drivers and bus monitors, or alternate plan as needed to cover routes in absence of regular drivers.
Monitors routes using transportation monitoring system or GPS for highest efficiency.
Attends meetings, trainings, and in-services to maintain knowledge & skills, learn updated information that improves efficiency & safety, and gain competence in revisions to state and federal transportation laws.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of state and local laws, regulations, and guidelines regarding bus routes, stops, driver requirements, safety related precautions and the operation of passenger buses; including pre and post-trip bus safety inspection procedures.
Thorough knowledge of transportation monitoring systems or GPS, ability to perform arithmetical calculations and skill to read/understand a map.
Working knowledge of special requirements of working effectively with physically, mentally, and emotionally disabled students.
Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices relating to motivation, delegation, and communication.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students and drivers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Excel and Word.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum: High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years’ experience in transportation vocation including two (2) years experience in hiring and supervising a workforce; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desirable: Associates Degree/Completion of technical trade school or vocational college and five (5) plus years’ experience supervising a workforce in Transportation vocation.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain a valid NC CDL driver’s license with both P and S endorsements, maintain a satisfactory driving record, and have access to a vehicle during work hours to travel to meetings or other work sites as assigned.
DOT drug testing performed on a random basis.
Pay Grade OSS3 - $3,884.
46 Monthly Salary - Full Time Position
